Spinnerette – Bowery Ballroom – 6/22/09 – NY, NY

Brody Dalle and her guttural growl are back. And it’s about damn time. Despite having woken up Monday morning with laryngitis, Dalle explained to the crowd that a “shot in the ass” resuscitated her voice in time for the evening show, which celebrated the release of Spinnerette’s self-titled debut LP. If Dalle wasn’t in top form Monday night, it was hard to tell.

Guitarist Tony Bevilacqua added a punk edge to songs that are decidedly tamer than those of The Distillers, the now-defunct progenitor of Spinnerette. Marriage and motherhood may have softened Dalle up a bit; still, with her face disappearing into a tousle of reddish-black bangs, one hand on the mic and the other exploring her voluptuous body (much to the delight of the audience), she might as well be the poster-woman for the rocker M.I.L.F.
