Blogger for Hire

Most posts I write for this blog are things I do on my own time, because I want to. However, I am available to review shows and CDs and to conduct interviews by request in exchange for donations to my site.

I’m also available to write band bios and press releases. (Samples of past work available upon request.)

Here’s the pay scale:

  • Performance review (450 words): $25
  • Note: if your show requires tickets or a cover charge, I’ll ask you to put me on the guest list.
  • CD Review (450 words): $25
  • Performance review + CD review (700 words): $40
  • Interview (Q&A format, 900 words): $100*
  • Band bio (500-750 words): $100*
  • Press release prices will depend on whether or not I have to conduct an interview.
  • No interview required (500 words): $50
  • Interview required (500-750 words): $100*
  •

For performance reviews, I will take photos of you playing live, and I will give you copies of the photos for you to use however you want in the future so long as I am credited as the photographer.

I reserve the right to express honest opinions in my reviews. However, as it’s not my goal to bash indie bands, I also reserve the right to refund your money and not write about you if I feel that, by giving an honest opinion, I would be doing you more harm than good. In other words, I won’t let you pay me for a completely negative review.

In the interest of full disclosure to readers, I will tag any paid blog posts with the “Blogger for Hire” category.

I experimented with this “blogger for hire”/journalism + PR blend during SXSW 2011. It stirred up some controversial discussion (see comments on this post), which I believe is healthy, not only for the life of my blog but also for the indie artist/indie writer relationship dialogue and for the question of the role of the “arts critic” (I use that term loosely) relative to the perpetuation of the arts. (More on that last point in another blog post…)

If you’d like to hire me to write about your music, please email me: originalhipsterblog@gmail.com

*You may notice that the charge per word is steeper for pieces that include interviews. That’s because I have to spend time transcribing the interview after recording it (with your permission, of course), which doubles the workload for me.

And one more note: These prices and word counts are slightly different (more expensive, in some cases) from the ones I used during SXSW ’11. The reason is that the SXSW experiment helped me get a better understanding of the amount of time I need to write the posts.
